Best flavour combinations for baking

The magic of our NOMU MiniMakes Small Batch Baking range lies in the versatility of the 7 mixes. Each mix makes a dough or batter base that forms the foundation for loads of fun variations, allowing you to experiment with your own delicious ideas. ONE MIX. MANY MAKES!

We’ve put together some of our favourite flavour combinations to inspire your next MiniMakes creation. Introducing flavours is easy! You can add fun inclusions directly to your dough/batter, like berries, chopped chocolate, citrus zest or nuts. Swirl spreads, nut butter, jam or curd into batters before baking, or play around with different frostings, toppings, glazes and finishes.

1. Caramel + apple

The combo of sweet apples and rich, slightly bitter caramel is wonderfully nostalgic and transports you straight to auburn-tinted Autumn days. Try it in this Apple pie skillet blondie (pictured right), Spiced apple cake or Upside-down caramel apple cake

2. Chocolate + hazelnut

So basically Nutella! We love using this combo in bakes like Gooey Nutella cookie cups, Milk chocolate hazelnut cookies and Chocolate cherry hazelnut biscotti (pictured right).

3. Lemon + berries

Whether you choose blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or raspberries, lemon is a brilliant way to amp up their delightfully bright acidity. Try our Lemon blueberry tray bake with cream cheese frosting or Glazed lemon raspberry yoghurt cake (pictured right).

4. Biscoff + chocolate

We absolutely cannot turn a blind eye to chocolate and Biscoff. Biscoff is a moreish not-too-sweet spread made from Speculaas cookies. Its warm spiced flavours make it a fantastic friend for either dark or white chocolate. Have a look at our Chocolate Biscoff poke cake (pictured right), Stuffed chocolate air fryer cookies and Biscoff brownies.

5. Raspberry + dark chocolate

This super sexy combo of bitter dark chocolate and bright, zingy raspberries is a match made in heaven! We love using it to make Raspberry brownies, Vegan chocolate raspberry muffins or Raspberry choc chip cookies (pictured right). If dark chocolate isn’t your thing, raspberries also pair well with white chocolate, like in these blondie bars!

6. Pistachio + white chocolate

There’s something so sophisticated about this one. Not only do these two ingredients work well together flavour-wise, but their contrasting textures and colours also make for a rather special sweet treat. A great option for giftable cookies (we’ve made both chewy and snap cookies!) and particularly moreish in White chocolate pistachio blondies (pictured right).

7. Salty + sweet

Salt is a fantastic way to enhance flavours and balance sweetness in bakes, the most familiar concept being salted caramel. Saltiness can also be introduced with ingredients like nuts and pretzels (check out these Caramel macadamia blondies), or you can garnish your final bakes with a small pinch of flakey sea salt like in these Chocolate caramel thumbprint cookies (pictured right).

8. Dark chocolate + orange

Bitter dark chocolate and fragrant orange is one of those combos that feels super grownup and luxurious. What better way to enjoy this powerhouse than in some Fudgy vegan chocolate brownies (pictured right)!

9. Chocolate + peanut butter

Treat your inner child to not just chocolate OR peanut butter but both, in one scrumptious mouthful! Have a look at these Vegan Snickers brownie bars, Peanut butter monster cookies, Chocolate peanut butter crumble cake and Peanut butter-stuffed brownie bites

10. Coconut + passionfruit

This tropical explosion is brilliant for more summery bakes. This Passionfruit & coconut cake is a great example – soft coconut sponge cake topped with a whipped passionfruit frosting and fresh passionfruit. Coconut is also amazing paired with lime!

11. Chocolate + coffee

Fondly referred to as ‘mocha’, chocolate and coffee compliment each other’s rich, dark flavour profiles with a magically synergistic effect. These Frosted mocha cookie bars, Chocolate espresso sandwich cookies and Espresso cupcakes are a great place to start!
